#UniqueFact | CIA Agent Bought Bitcoin in 2011 Just to Show Off to His Boss
At a technology conference held by In-Q-Tel (IQT)—the CIA's investment firm—a US intelligence agent bought 1 Bitcoin (BTC) directly from Gavin Andresen, one of the early Bitcoin developers.
Interestingly, this Bitcoin purchase wasn't for a secret mission, but just so the agent could show off to his boss! At that time, the price of Bitcoin was only $15 per coin.
Gavin had brought Bitbills—physical versions of Bitcoin—as examples at the event. The attendees were not just anyone: there were representatives from PayPal, Facebook, and even The Fed (the US central bank).
"I showed the Bitbills I had, and the agent said it was cool and wanted to buy it to show his superior," Gavin recounted in a podcast.
This moment proves that decentralized technology like Bitcoin can penetrate the strict bureaucracy of US intelligence, even at a time when Bitcoin was still considered "weird" and often associated with the black market.
If the agent still holds that Bitcoin until now (April 2025), its value has reached $95,000—up 600,000%!
Lesson:
- From $15 to $95K— the most random investment but the most profitable!
- Even the CIA was curious about Bitcoin from the start.
- Don't underestimate crypto assets, who knows they might become a *hidden gem!
