A Chinese state media outlet reported on Thursday that, contrary to the claims of U.S. President Donald Trump, it is Washington, not Beijing, that is 'eager' to negotiate regarding tariffs, asserting that 'the U.S. administration has taken the initiative' in many bilateral communications.
For weeks, the world's two largest economies have been engaged in a trade war ignited by the U.S. president.
Trump imposed tariffs of 145% on most Chinese products imported into his country. China responded by imposing additional tariffs of 125% on its U.S. imports.
On Thursday, the social network 'Youyuan Tantiantian,' affiliated with the Chinese Radio and Television Administration, cited informed sources saying, 'For some time now, the United States has been communicating with China through various channels, hoping to initiate negotiations regarding the tariff issue.'
It added, 'Regarding the negotiations, there is no doubt that the United States is the party most affected by the pressures. The Trump administration is currently facing multiple pressures: economic pressure and pressure from public opinion as well.'
The U.S. president has repeatedly indicated that China contacted the United States for bilateral talks regarding tariffs, but Beijing has strongly denied these claims.
