Elon Musk has announced he’s stepping back from his role with the U.S. government and President Trump’s Cabinet. After just over three months, he’s decided to shift his attention back to Tesla.

At a Cabinet meeting on April 30, Elon told Trump and his team that starting in May, he’ll focus almost entirely on Tesla again. “It’s been an honor to work with all of you,” Elon said. “Thank you for everything.”

He also praised the administration’s first 100 days as historic, calling the progress “record-breaking.”

This move didn’t come as a shock—Elon had already hinted at it during Tesla’s recent earnings call. He said he’d only spend “a day or two per week” on government work moving forward.

Savings Fall Short of Big Promises

Elon’s government project, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), was supposed to save $2 trillion. But so far, it’s only saved $160 billion—still a big number, but far below expectations.

Meanwhile, reports say the disruptions caused by DOGE—like layoffs and delays—could end up costing $135 billion this year alone.

Elon Heads Back to Tesla

Even though he’s not completely leaving DOGE, Elon says it’s no longer a top priority. “I’ll still help if needed,” he said, “but most of my time will go back to Tesla.”

Trump thanked him, saying, “You’ve been a tremendous help,” and the Cabinet gave Elon a round of applause.

So, after a short but dramatic stint in Washington, Elon is returning to his main mission—building cars, leading Tesla, and maybe dodging a few more headlines. #DOGE
