The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, considered the decree signed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to be 'beneficial.' This decree aims to prevent the accumulation of tariffs on the same product and reduces taxes on auto parts imported by manufacturers.
'What was published in March for automakers already gave a competitive advantage to Mexico. With what was published yesterday, there is an additional competitive advantage. So, it is still something beneficial for our country,' the president stated during her morning press conference.
The announcement came after the American president reached an agreement with automobile manufacturers in the U.S. to relieve them of tariffs over the next two years, as part of his strategy to assist the sector.
These reductions would apply to both domestic and foreign companies with automobile factories in the U.S., as long as the final assembly of the car takes place in the country.
Sheinbaum emphasized that with the decree signed on Tuesday, not only the parts built in the United States are recognized, but also the auto parts built in Mexico and Canada, which are part of the T-MEC, the free trade agreement among the three countries.
'That is very important because again there is a recognition of the value of the T-MEC,' she emphasized.
The president pointed out that there is very good communication with the automakers and stressed that so far none have indicated plans to abandon their production in Mexico.
'So far, no automaker has proposed any changes, any impact (...) There is a very good atmosphere to continue; Mexico, with the publication of yesterday, still has more comparative advantages than other countries,' she said.
