Back in 2014, a customer bought Bitcoin from an exchange and transferred it to a Multibit wallet, saving what they believed was the correct password. However, in 2017, when they tried to access the funds to sell them, the password didn’t work. Convinced the issue was with the wallet and not the password, they reached out for help.
After receiving the wallet file, password hints, and a list of commonly used passwords, we began analyzing the file immediately. It quickly became clear that the recorded password was incorrect, so we shifted our focus to password recovery. Given Multibit's strong encryption and limited computing speed, we prioritized the case and allocated all available resources to it.
We tested dozens of password variation strategies, and after around two hours of intensive work, we successfully cracked the password and recovered access to the wallet.
