The Secretary-General is profoundly saddened by the passing of Mr. Amara Essy, a towering figure in African diplomacy and a steadfast champion of unity and peace. Mr. Essy served with distinction as the former Interim Chairperson of the African Union Commission, President of the 49th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Côte d’Ivoire.
Throughout his career, Mr. Essy held numerous leadership roles within the United Nations and played a vital part in shaping Africa’s path toward greater integration and cooperation. His stewardship during the historic transition from the Organization of African Unity to the African Union marked a defining moment for the continent.
A tireless advocate for peace, Mr. Essy was instrumental in mediating and resolving several conflicts across Africa. As Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo, he demonstrated remarkable diplomacy and a commitment to political stability in the region.
Mr. Essy’s legacy as a consensus builder and statesman lives on. His leadership of the General Assembly was marked by vision, inclusivity, and integrity, earning him the respect of peers worldwide.
The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to Mr. Essy’s family, the Government and people of Côte d’Ivoire, and the entire African Union family.
