China's PLA Navy’s Type 22 missile boat joins foreign warship interception, rights protection missions in South China Sea.

China’s PLA Navy has deployed Type 22 fast attack missile boats (220 tons) to counter larger US warships (8,000-9,000 tons) in the South China Sea. These stealth catamarans, equipped with waterjet propulsion, can reach speeds of 50 knots and carry eight YJ-83 anti-ship missiles, a 30 mm gun, and jamming flares.

Designed initially for coastal defense, the Type 22’s speed, agility, and low radar visibility make it effective for littoral patrols, escorts, and intercepting foreign vessels, as shown in a recent operation.

Its versatility and firepower, comparable to a frigate, highlight its ongoing role in China’s maritime strategy.
