Million-dollar discovery at the bottom of the sea: a chest full of Roman Empire gold coins has been found
The Roman Empire is making headlines again with the recent discovery of more than 500 coins from this key period in world history. This unprecedented archaeological find surprised researchers off the coast of Caesarea, Israel. In a recent expedition by the Marine Archaeology Department of the Israel Antiquities Authority, the remains of two ancient shipwrecks were discovered, containing, among other treasures, an impressive chest with hundreds of Roman silver and bronze coins. Although these were not exclusively gold coins, the historical and archaeological value of this loot is incalculable.
