Spain's April 2025 Blackout: A Surge in Solar Power Causes Grid Collapse

On April 28, 2025, a massive blackout disrupted Spain and Portugal, leaving millions without power for more than 10 hours. Initial investigations from Red Eléctrica de España (REE) point to a surge in solar energy as the primary cause. At around 12:33 PM, two large solar plants in southwest Spain disconnected simultaneously, causing a ripple effect that led to the disconnection of the Iberian grid from the European network. While power has begun returning in some areas, parts of Barcelona, Sevilla, and Pamplona remain without electricity.
