On April 28, 2025, a widespread power outage plunged Spain and Portugal into darkness, affecting tens of millions across the Iberian Peninsula. The blackout brought daily life to a standstill—transport systems were paralyzed, airports and train stations shuttered, telecommunications failed, and hospitals turned to emergency generators.

Spain’s grid operator, Red Eléctrica, linked the disruption to an unusual atmospheric phenomenon triggered by extreme temperature fluctuations. These conditions reportedly caused oscillations in high-voltage lines, disrupting system synchronization. Portuguese grid operator REN warned that restoring full power could take up to a week.

While technical issues are the primary focus, officials are also investigating the possibility of a cyberattack. Emergency meetings are underway in both countries to coordinate the response.

Major urban centers—including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Lisbon—are heavily impacted, with nuclear facilities and major industrial operations halted. Brief outages have also been reported in parts of southern France.

Authorities urge the public to minimize vehicle use and remain patient as crews work to restore power and stabilize the grid.
