Ethereum is something more than a monetary network. Described in 2013 in the Whitepaper by Vitalik Buterin, a Canadian of Russian descent, its purpose is very different from bitcoin.

It is a cryptocurrency, just like bitcoin, but its main utility is not being a means of payment. Its goal is not to be 'money'. Ether is fuel for a global computer.
