#TariffsPause Trump says that if the U.S. continues to have high tariffs within a year, it would be a 'total victory'
President Donald Trump said that if the United States still maintains high tariffs on foreign imports within a year, he would consider it a "total victory."
During the interview, which was conducted by senior political correspondent Eric Cortellessa and editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs, Time asked the president if he would consider it a victory that "high tariffs, whether 20%, 30%, or 50%" remained in effect for a year.
"Total victory," Trump replied, adding: "Because the country would be making a fortune."
Trump said that having zero tariffs "would be easy," but that it would not incentivize companies to produce their goods in the United States.
