US President Donald Trump has commented on the long-standing tensions between India and Pakistan, saying the two countries have had a difficult relationship for "1,500 years." He added that he is close to both nations. His remarks came after a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region on April 22, where 25 tourists and one local person were killed.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said the conflict over Kashmir has been going on for "a thousand years" or maybe even longer.
"I'm very close to India, and I'm very close to Pakistan," he said. "They've been fighting over Kashmir for a thousand years."
Trying to ease concerns about the ongoing conflict, Trump said he believes the two countries will find a way to resolve things.
"There have been tensions along that border for 1,500 years. It's always been like that. But I’m sure they’ll figure it out somehow," he added.
Trump did not mention Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif by name but said he knows both leaders.
"There’s always been tension between Pakistan and India," he said.
Trump’s statement followed a strong condemnation of terrorism by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
She said, “As President Trump and Secretary Marco Rubio have clearly stated, the United States stands with India and strongly condemns all acts of terrorism.”
The attack on April 22 took place in Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination in Kashmir. At least 26 people, including one Nepali national, were killed when terrorists opened fire.
Eyewitnesses said panic broke out as people ran for cover after hearing gunshots.
Since then, the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF have launched a major search operation to find those responsible.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
