Ethereum Devs Push for Major Gas Limit Boost in Fusaka Fork
Ethereum core developers are eyeing a big move: a proposal to raise the Layer 1 gas limit to 150 million as part of the upcoming Fusaka hard fork, which follows the Pectra upgrade. Introduced on April 23 by Ethereum Foundation’s Sophia Gold, EIP-9678 aims to make this increase a key priority.
Tim Beiko, a leading core developer, confirmed during the April 24 All Core Devs Execution (ACDE) call that the team plans to finalize the EIP soon, even though it’s an unusual process—something similar was done with EIP-7840. The goal is to align all client defaults to support the new gas limit ahead of Fusaka’s expected launch in late 2025.
The move is driven by growing interest in scaling Layer 1 performance, but it comes with technical challenges. Higher gas limits could expose bugs, so developers want enough time to test and fix client issues before rollout.
While validators ultimately set the gas limit, having a unified EIP will help ensure smooth coordination across clients. For context, Ethereum’s average gas limit was around 30 million in 2021, and it recently increased to just under 36 million. The proposed jump to 150 million marks a bold step in Ethereum’s scalability journey. #ETH $ETH
