BINANCE founder CZ announces a donation of 1,000 BNB for earthquake relief in Myanmar and Thailand

Changpeng Zhao donates BNB worth 90 million yen

Changpeng Zhao (CZ), co-founder of the major cryptocurrency exchange Binance, announced on March 29, 2025, that he would donate a total of 1,000 BNB (500 BNB to each country) to support victims of the major earthquake that occurred in Myanmar and Thailand.

The donation amount of 1,000 BNB is equivalent to about 90 million yen when converted to Japanese yen (1 BNB = approximately 89,500 yen), attracting significant attention as emergency support through cryptocurrency.

CZ stated on his X (Twitter) that regarding the method of sending donations, 'If we cannot find a highly transparent on-chain donation platform available for donations, we will distribute funds through Binance headquarters and Binance Thailand.'

I will donate 500 BNB to both Myanmar and Thailand.

Please let me know if there is a highly transparent on-chain donation system using DID. If not, I will request distribution through Binance and Binance Thailand.

Occurrence and damage situation of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

The earthquake occurred on March 28, 2025, in the afternoon (local time), with the epicenter estimated to be near the major city of Mandalay in central Myanmar. The magnitude of the earthquake reached 7.7, causing tremendous damage to surrounding areas.

In Mandalay, near the epicenter, there have been reports of buildings collapsing, including parts of a pagoda built several hundred years ago, causing serious damage. A state of emergency has been declared in six regions and states in Myanmar, but the communication network has become unstable due to the earthquake, making it difficult to grasp the full extent of the damage.

According to a statement from Myanmar's military government on March 29, the death toll from the earthquake has reached 1,002, with 2,376 injured. As the scale of the damage becomes clearer, the death toll continues to rise, with reports indicating that it exceeded 1,600 by the next day on the 30th.

Strong tremors were observed in neighboring Thailand, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed, trapping many workers underneath. According to reports, 11 people have been killed so far, and 76 people are still unaccounted for, trapped under the collapsed building, with rescue operations ongoing.

In light of these circumstances, Min Aung Hlaing, the head of Myanmar's military government, has called on various countries to 'seek as much international assistance as possible.' Rescue and support activities are still being carried out in the disaster area, and rapid assistance to victims is urgently needed.

Expanding disaster relief through cryptocurrency

The support from the cryptocurrency community is an example of the growing trend of disaster relief through cryptocurrency in recent years.

Binance has previously conducted donation activities for natural disasters and humanitarian crises in various countries through its charity organization 'Binance Charity Foundation,' utilizing blockchain technology to publicly disclose the flow of donations with high transparency.

In response to CZ's announcement, support is spreading within the cryptocurrency industry.

Anndy Lian, an international blockchain technology advisor, pledged a donation of 44 BNB (equivalent to $26,444/4 million yen) to a non-profit organization conducting support activities in Myanmar on his social media, calling on his followers to cooperate with donations.

Donations using cryptocurrency have the advantage of being able to track the use of funds on the blockchain, and further expansion of use for disaster relief and humanitarian purposes is expected in the future.
