Almost $1.5 billion in cryptocurrency was stolen from cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, marking the largest theft in the history of the industry.
"Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has reported that one of its wallets has been hacked, resulting in what crypto analysts believe is a loss of nearly $1.5 billion in cryptocurrency.
Earlier on Friday, analyst ZachXBT reported on his Telegram channel that $1.46 billion in assets were withdrawn from one of the Bybit wallets as a result of "suspicious transactions."
Crypto detective ZachXBT was the first to notice the suspicious transactions - at 18:20 Moscow time, he recorded the transfer of large sums from Bybit wallets.
The head of the crypto exchange, Ben Zhou, confirmed on his account on the social network X that a hacker had gained control of a cold wallet with Ethereum cryptocurrency and transferred everything to an unknown address.
This hack became the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, surpassing the $611 million theft from Poly in terms of amount Network in 2021, the agency writes, citing the analytical Elliptic. In August 2021, the Poly Network blockchain platform was hacked, during which more than $600 million was stolen from its users.
