Bitcoin Suddenly Plummets! Nearly 240,000 Liquidations

On February 2nd, Bitcoin plummeted, falling below $100,000 for the first time since January 27. As of 20:30, Coinglass data shows that nearly 240,000 people across the cryptocurrency network were liquidated within 24 hours, with liquidation amounts exceeding $500 million. Trump Coin also experienced a significant drop, briefly falling to around $20.

According to Broker China, analysts pointed out that the crash in cryptocurrencies is partly related to Trump's tariff policy. On February 1st local time, the U.S. government announced a 25% tariff on imported goods from Canada and Mexico. On the same day, Trump signed an executive order imposing a 10% tariff on goods imported from China. Driven by risk-averse sentiment, investors are selling off their cryptocurrencies. With traditional markets closed over the weekend, cryptocurrencies were the first to be impacted by tariff risk aversion.

On the other hand, this is also related to the recent surge of the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek. DeepSeek recently released its open-source model DeepSeek-R1, which performs on par with or even surpasses OpenAI's o1 model, while its API price is only 1% of OpenAI's. This breaks the long-standing path dependence of the global AI industry on “computational power,” stunning the U.S. AI sector and prompting investors to sell off stocks of American AI giants and cryptocurrency positions.
