BitTorrent is one of the largest peer-to-peer file-sharing networks in the world. It has over 90 million active users and more than 2 billion installed software clients. The protocol was created by programmer Bram Cohen in 2001 to facilitate the transfer of large files between users without the need for a central server. Cohen left BitTorrent Inc. in 2017 to launch the cryptocurrency startup Chia (XCH). The utility token BTT was introduced when BitTorrent acquired TRON. It is designed to incentivize transactions within the network.
