#plataformaX X has a massive bot problem that won't go away
The cryptocurrency community has been asking Musk to address the bot issue since he purchased the platform in 2022. However, little has been done to curb the problem.

Musk has proposed several solutions to the automated bots, including asking users to register a credit card which would incur a small fee of a few cents to impose a cost on creating new accounts, preventing bot farms from mobilizing armies of fake accounts.

Often, these bots impersonate crypto influencers and industry leaders to sell fake tokens or redirect users to malicious sites through phishing links designed to steal funds.

AI chatbots have also fueled romance scams. These scams are characterized by a long time horizon in which a threat actor pretends to have a romantic interest in their target to build trust with the victim over time.

Once trust is sufficiently established, the malicious actor typically requests funds from the victim, either by pretending to have financial problems or presenting a fake investment plan.

A 2023 study from the Network Contagion Research Institute also found that bots were responsible for manipulating altcoin prices by using coordinated posts from several bots to artificially inflate prices.

Bots remain a problem for X users in the crypto space in their fight against spam, account impersonation, and phishing links.
Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) urged Elon Musk to ban bots - automated accounts that spam the social network and are used to amplify content or for coordinated attacks - on the X platform.

"If someone uses Grok, ChatGPT, or DeepSeek to generate a tweet and copy and paste it here, that’s fine, but posting to the API should be disabled," CZ wrote in a post on X on March 9.

In a separate comment, the founder of Binance differentiated automated social media bots from AI agents, stating that the latter were useful in real-world applications like booking hotels or writing code without having to socialize with them.

Automated bots are a well-documented problem on X that spam the site and are particularly active in the cryptocurrency sphere, plaguing users with fraudulent messages advertising fake tokens, phishing links to malicious sites, and pump-and-dump schemes.
