What explains Zuckerberg’s silence on the US election and Musk’s support for Trump?
As the US election approaches, the leaders of two of the world’s most influential social networks appear to be playing by supposedly different sets of political rules.
After years of pressure from Republicans who accused him of unfairly favoring Democrats, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has sought to shake off the perception of political influence.
“My goal is to be neutral and not play a role one way or the other — or even appear to be playing a role,” Zuckerberg wrote in a letter to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan last month. Zuckerberg said Meta would resist government pressure on content moderation, and that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, would not resume previous donations to a nonpartisan election infrastructure project that Republicans attacked as serving Democrats in the 2020 election cycle.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, took the opposite approach. Not only did he endorse former President Donald Trump and host the Republican candidate in a friendly live audio chat on X, but he also helped launch a fundraising campaign that is investing millions to elect Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris.
