An important piece of news can be seen as a victory for the 'progressive side' in the Bitcoin community: the upcoming Bitcoin Core v30 update will raise the OP_RETURN limit. This promises to open up many new functionalities for the network, beyond just storing regular transaction information.
According to a notice from developer Gloria Zhao on the evening of June 9, 2025, the upcoming Bitcoin Core v30 version scheduled for deployment in October will allow node operators to customize the OP_RETURN limit from the current 80 bytes up to 4 MB. Ms. Zhao explained that this software should reflect all the desires of the Bitcoin ecosystem. Therefore, Bitcoin Core v30 will increase the default OP_RETURN limit to 4 MB, but still allow users to revert to the old setting if desired.
