Iran "suspects" Portugal's involvement in US attack and promises to investigate

The Iranian government announced that it will investigate a possible involvement of Portugal in the recent attack carried out by the United States, allegedly from the Lajes base, located in the Azores. Iran's concern is related to the use of this infrastructure, which is under Portuguese sovereignty, but shared with the US under bilateral agreements.

In an interview with Rádio Renascença, the Iranian ambassador in Lisbon stated that the use of the base by the Americans raises serious questions about the possible Portuguese responsibility in the operation. The Portuguese Ministry of Defense confirmed, meanwhile, that the US requested permission for 12 refueling aircraft to operate at that base.

Iranian diplomacy now wants to ascertain to what extent Portugal may have collaborated — directly or indirectly — with the offensive that has contributed to the worsening tensions in the Middle East. Authorities in Tehran promise to follow up on the case through diplomatic means.
