According to Cointelegraph, a man in Queensland, Australia, had his Bitcoin, waterfront mansion and Mercedes-Benz confiscated for alleged criminal proceeds. The Australian Federal Police said the assets may be related to criminal proceeds.
The Criminal Asset Forfeiture Task Force, led by the AFP, said it had seized nearly 25 bitcoins, luxury homes and cars with a total value of approximately A$4.5 million as of May 18. The investigation began in September 2018 when Luxembourg law enforcement shared information about suspicious bitcoin transactions.
The AFP said its investigation linked the man to the theft of 950 bitcoins from a French cryptocurrency exchange in 2013. Although no criminal charges were filed for the bitcoin theft, a court has ordered the confiscation of the assets.
Local media 7NEWS reported that the asset owner Shane Stephen Duffy had pleaded guilty to selling the personal data of (League of Legends) players. The AFP said it used its unique power to confiscate assets, and the proceeds would be used to support crime prevention and law enforcement measures.
