Binance and CZ’s Warning on the Use of AI in Deepfake Hacking

The co-founder and former CEO of Binance, Changpeng CZ Zhao, has issued a warning on X regarding the use of AI in new types of deepfake hacking.

“I’ve already used it in new types of deepfake hacking. Even verifying a video call will soon be out the window. Do not install software from an unofficial link, especially not from your “friends” (most likely they have been hacked).”

In practice, it seems that Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being used in hacker attacks, to the point that CZ steps in to warn the community.

In his message, CZ warns to be careful not to install software from an unofficial link, and to verify if the account from which these links are received has not been hacked.

The alarm from the former CEO of Binance came in response to a post on X by Mai Fujimoto, a well-known Japanese crypto influencer, who revealed that her main account on X had been compromised.

The violation would have taken place while Fujimoto was engaged in a Zoom call with an account of an acquaintance of hers that had been hacked. Right here, the influencer was induced to click on an update link and her X, Telegram, and Metamask accounts were compromised.

Binance: the intervention of the former CEO on AI and the crypto sector

The message on X from Changpeng Zhao today is very different from his speech on AI and crypto during the Token2049 event in Dubai.

On that day, the former CEO of Binance offered a deep analysis on the integration between blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and AI agents, highlighting the opportunities and the critical aspects of the emerging market.

Specifically, CZ explained how AI is revolutionizing different sectors, from education to governance. In the particular case of the crypto sector, CZ stated that cryptocurrency represents the natural currency for artificial intelligence.

In fact, the most advanced AI agents are integrating specific tokens to operate within decentralized ecosystems.

Despite this general enthusiasm, CZ also expressed his opinion on the AI tokens currently available on the market.

The former CEO of Binance stated that most of them are devoid of real utility and criticized the “launchpads” that allow the creation of AI agents and tokens with a simple click. In other words, Zhao of Binance claimed that 99.99% of these tokens are useless.

AI and the new category of crypto hacker

Recently, there has been talk about how AI is creating a new category of crypto hackers, capable of automating attacks and making them more sophisticated than human ones.

Specifically, these are software called AI bots, such as AI chatbot or AI trading bot, which activate self-learning, developing new cyber-attacks in the crypto sector, making them more dangerous than traditional hacking methods.

This happens precisely because the AI bot software programs are able to process large amounts of data and can also make independent decisions. Not only that, they are also capable of performing complex tasks without even human intervention.

In this regard, the report by Chainalysis at the end of 2024 stated that some generative AI software was used to create fake characters for scammers. This crypto scam recorded a 1900% increase in flows to AI service providers from 2021 to 2024.
