Instead of validators re-running blocks, the system will rely on ZK-proofs—tiny cryptographic receipts—to confirm accuracy. This reduces computational demand. Hence, validators will only need to verify these proofs, not the entire transaction block. Besides, Ethereum plans to allow multiple zkVMs to verify different proofs, adding security without slowing down performance.
Driving Home-Proving with Real-Time Standards
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) wants ZK clients to be efficient and accessible. Developers must ensure proofs generate in under 10 seconds. Additionally, the hardware should cost less than $100,000 and consume under 10 kilowatts. This opens doors for individuals to run zkVMs from home.
Moreover, real-time proving will become a technical standard for zkVM teams. The EF is pushing developers to prioritize speed, cost, and energy efficiency. These goals are vital to decentralizing Ethereum further and defending it against centralization or censorship.
The upgrade will begin gradually. Initially, optional ZK clients will run alongside existing validator setups. However, once they prove reliable, Ethereum will switch fully to proof verification. This shift will redefine how the network achieves consensus, optimizing performance while maintaining trust.
New Teams to Boost Adoption and Security
Alongside the technical overhaul, Ethereum has reorganized its development structure. The EF introduced the Ecosystem Development (EcoDev) team to drive real-world adoption. This team will focus on four pillars: growing the developer base, supporting applications, funding research, and enabling new founders.
Additionally, Ethereum is streamlining its core security focus under the “One Trillion Security” initiative. This includes better guidance for developers and strategic grants to high-impact projects.
As other blockchains scramble to incorporate comparable ZK-proof solutions, Ethereum takes this action. Ethereum is in the lead in the race for widespread ZK adoption, according to its roadmap.
