Ripple’s RLUSD drought insurance protected 517 Kenyans, 70% of them women, without triggering payouts due to favorable vegetation data.
The second phase will insure 533 pastoralists in Kenya, backed by $40K in funding and support from Mercy Corps and Arbitrum.
RLUSD’s blockchain-based system offers transparent, data-driven disbursements using Ethereum and satellite vegetation monitoring indices.
Ripple has completed the initial phase of a blockchain-based drought insurance program in Laikipia County, Kenya. The pilot covered 517 pastoralists using RLUSD, Ripple's newly introduced stablecoin. Around 70% of the participants were women. The campaign did not trigger any payouts, as satellite vegetation data indicated favorable grazing conditions throughout the insured period.
The insurance mechanism used satellite-derived vegetation indices to detect drought risks. With vegetation levels sufficient for livestock survival, no disbursement was necessary. As a result, the RLUSD funds remained intact and will now be applied to the next season. This method supports anticipatory aid by providing financial security during high-risk periods.
Next Phase Targets 533 People with Increased Funding
The next campaign is set to cover 533 individuals, expanding slightly from the previous phase. The upcoming effort again focuses on Laikipia County, a region with frequent drought challenges. Ripple has committed to supporting this phase with a target funding goal of $40,000. Each participant will receive $75 in relief if satellite data shows low vegetation levels following the May 2025 long rainy season.

This new campaign also benefits from leftover funds totaling $12,000. These funds originated from previous efforts by Mercy Corps Ventures and Arbitrum. The combined resources will enhance coverage and maintain operational continuity. DIVA Donate continues to oversee deployment and coordination on the ground.
Blockchain Provides Transparency and Efficiency
The RLUSD stablecoin operates on the Ethereum blockchain using an escrow model. This structure ensures transparency in donation management and guarantees conditional disbursements based on independently verified vegetation data. The digital nature of the stablecoin helps track fund movement in real time, improving accountability.
Ripple recently named BNY Mellon as the primary custodian for RLUSD. The partnership with the traditional financial institution aligns with Ripple’s aim to bridge conventional finance and digital assets. RLUSD’s market capitalization currently stands at $501 million. Trading volume has seen a sharp 150 percent increase in the last 24 hours, indicating growing activity around the token.
