Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has acquired 1,234 BTC worth $132.7 million, raising its total Bitcoin holdings to 12,345 BTC. The move positions the firm ahead of Tesla in corporate Bitcoin ownership rankings.
According to a tweet by Cointelegraph, this latest purchase brings Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin treasury to approximately $1.3 billion based on current market prices. The company, which began its Bitcoin strategy in April 2024, is now the seventh-largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder.
Aggressive Treasury Plan Backed by Fresh Capital
This acquisition comes shortly after Metaplanet raised 74.9 billion yen ($515 million) through a stock issuance. The raised capital is part of a broader $555 million plan aimed at acquiring 1% of Bitcoin’s total supply.
The Tokyo-based company updated its target earlier this month and now aims to hold over 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. This long-term approach underlines the firm’s goal to become a leading institutional player in digital assets.
As part of its ongoing accumulation, Metaplanet’s BTC strategy aligns with other major players like MicroStrategy. This week, MicroStrategy added 245 BTC to its holdings, reaching a total of 592,345 BTC.
Stock Performance Remains Volatile Amid Accumulation Drive
Despite the bullish Bitcoin strategy, Metaplanet’s stock experienced a short-term dip. On Thursday at noon in Japan, the stock fell by 0.94%. Over the past five days, shares have dropped 12.2%.
However, year-to-date performance remains strong. The stock has surged 353.5%, reflecting investor confidence in its cryptocurrency direction. This upward trend demonstrates how market participants view the firm’s long-term BTC strategy.
With its 12,345 BTC, Metaplanet has now surpassed Tesla, which holds 11,509 BTC. The company’s rise in Bitcoin ownership is confirmed by data from bitcointreasuries.net, which tracks corporate holdings globally.
