Cardano Ouroboros Leios has now surpassed 5,700 development updates and 705,000 lines of code. A testnet is set to launch on June 23. Founder Charles Hoskinson says this milestone is something he 'could only dream of' when he started the project.
The progress of the code is happening alongside increasing market activity. ADA had a trading volume of $704 million over 24 hours on June 15, marking the highest level in seven days. Now the volume is at $634 million. ADA is trading around $0.185, which is 2.2% lower than a day ago, and still 94% off its all-time high of $3.09 from September 2021.
What is Ouroboros Leios?
Leios is Cardano's new consensus protocol designed to significantly boost the network’s transaction capacity. Unlike the current Ouroboros Praos, Leios features a new block production chain that can handle many more transactions simultaneously.
The project has now recorded over 5,700 updates across 705,000 lines of code. Hoskinson states that the team's efforts have exceeded his expectations.
"We've done things we could only dream of when I started the project," he says.

The testnet launch on June 23 will be the first time Leios runs on a real network. This is a crucial test for the protocol: either it works as planned, or the team discovers what needs to be improved ahead of a potential mainnet launch.
ADA volume is spiking, but the price is lagging.
The volume increase is clear and significant. ADA was among the most traded altcoins in the last 24 hours, with $634 million in turnover. Yesterday's figure was $704 million, marking the highest in a week. In the seven days prior, the average was $455 million per day.
However, the price hasn't kept pace with the volume. ADA climbed 12% over the last week, from around $0.165 last week to $0.189 yesterday before the price retraced. At $0.185, ADA has a market cap of about $6.6 billion, placing it at 17th among the largest cryptocurrencies.
In the grand scheme, the current price is far from the peak. ADA is still 94% below its all-time high of $3.09 from September 2021.
What the testnet means for Cardano.
Leios' codebase, with its 705,000 lines and 5,700 updates, shows the team has been grinding in the background, regardless of market fluctuations.
A successful testnet on June 23 will be the clearest signal yet that Leios can deliver what Hoskinson's team has promised. For a protocol built on peer-reviewed science and mathematical foundations, the testnet is where theory meets reality.
