**Binance Just Got Locked Out of Europe**

- Binance bet on Greece as its entry point to get an EU-wide license
- Facing likely rejection, Binance withdrew its Greek application on June 24 rather than wait to be formally refused
- That withdrawal meant it wouldn't hold a license by the June 30 deadline, forcing the suspension
- Binance is now expected to pursue a license through France instead, though any approval will likely land after July 1, leaving a gap
**Why regulators are wary:**
Binance's baggage includes a 2023 US guilty plea for anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations with penalties over $4 billion, founder Changpeng Zhao's own criminal plea and prison sentence, an open French investigation, and a UK ban dating to 2021.
