Most people think Bitcoin's biggest limitation is that it can't run complex smart contracts.
The more interesting question is: What if Bitcoin never needed them?
@BabylonLabs_io's Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBV) take a different approach using BitVM3.
Instead of executing smart contracts on Bitcoin, TBV only requires a valid Zero-Knowledge proof when someone wants to withdraw BTC. If a dishonest participant submits an invalid proof, BitVM3 allows the counterparty to cryptographically expose the cheater's committed secret through a garbled circuit, automatically blocking the withdrawal.
This changes the trust model.
Security no longer depends on a custodian, multisig committee, or bridge operator. It depends on cryptographic proof.
Even more impressive is the efficiency. Earlier BitVM approaches required challenge costs exceeding $15,000. BitVM3 reduces this to roughly $93 in rare dispute scenarios, while normal deposits and withdrawals remain inexpensive.
That may seem like a technical improvement, but it's actually an infrastructure breakthrough. Lower challenge costs make trust-minimized Bitcoin finance far more practical for institutions and developers.
The market often values applications first. History suggests infrastructure creates the strongest foundations.
