A federal regulator just cleared the path for a sitting president's family to run a chartered bank — and the crypto market is taking notice.
On Friday, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) granted preliminary conditional approval for a national trust bank charter to World Liberty Trust Company, an entity tied to World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture co-founded by members of the Trump family. If finalized, the charter would let World Liberty take over issuance and custody of its USD1 stablecoin — currently backed by roughly $4B in reserves — from BitGo Bank & Trust, its existing issuer.
The approval comes with conditions: a $20M minimum capital requirement (half held in liquid assets), mandatory disclosure of major business changes, and a qualified internal audit hire. It's also not a full bank license — no deposit-taking or lending, and several steps, including capital raising, remain before final approval.
This lands amid a broader OCC push toward crypto-linked charters, following similar approvals for Circle, Ripple, and others. But World Liberty's direct ties to the Trump family have already drawn scrutiny from lawmakers concerned about conflicts of interest.
Regulatory clarity is generally seen as bullish for stablecoin infrastructure — but when the applicant and the administration overseeing approval share a family name, does "clarity" carry a different kind of risk?
