FBI Agent Arrested Over Alleged $1 Million Crypto Theft
Former FBI supervisory special agent Patrick Yaroch has been arrested for allegedly stealing about $1 million in cryptocurrency from wallets linked to adversarial foreign accounts.
According to an affidavit filed on August 1, Yaroch admitted that he discovered private keys allowing him to transfer funds and made roughly a dozen transactions beginning in late 2024 or early 2025. He reportedly told investigators that he had made “very poor decisions” and acknowledged that he had seriously mishandled the situation.
Yaroch worked in the FBI’s counterintelligence and espionage division and was dismissed from the agency on July 31.
Investigators said he mixed the stolen assets with his personal crypto holdings and used ChatGPT to seek advice on investing or spending $1 million and potentially relocating to Europe. He later purchased a round-trip ticket to Portugal for September.
Yaroch has been charged with interstate transportation of stolen goods and receipt of stolen property, securities and money.
