Liberland: The Crypto Billionaires’ Nation Where Money Can Buy Political Power
On a disputed 7-square-kilometer strip between Serbia and Croatia, a self-declared micronation is trying to reinvent government through blockchain. Liberland rewards financial contributions with “Merit” tokens, and the more tokens a person holds, the greater their influence over political leadership.
Founded in 2015, the project claims 1,295 registered citizens and more than 812,000 citizenship applications. Yet no internationally recognized country formally recognizes Liberland, while access to its largely undeveloped territory remains difficult.
The experiment has attracted support from around 30 billionaires, including Tron founder Justin Sun, who serves as Liberland’s prime minister. Its supporters believe blockchain could eventually replace traditional state institutions, turning governance, citizenship and voting power into programmable digital assets.
Critics, however, argue that the system resembles the property-based voting models of past centuries—only now wealth is measured in tokens.
