I keep coming back to the unbonding period on Babylon.
When you stake BTC through Babylon's timelock scripts, you keep custody the whole time. Nobody takes your Bitcoin. But when you want it back, it doesn't just land in your wallet. There's a waiting window before it unlocks, similar in spirit to unbonding periods in other proof-of-stake systems.
Usually in crypto, "self-custodial" gets treated as a synonym for "liquid whenever you want." Babylon splits those apart. You never hand over your BTC, but you're not free to move it instantly either. Custody and liquidity turn out to be two separate promises, not one.
That's fine in theory, until markets move fast and everyone wants out at once. Slashing exists for finality providers who misbehave, but the unbonding delay itself isn't a penalty — it's just friction, and friction behaves differently under calm conditions than under stress.
I'm not sure yet how that window feels when tested by an actual rush for the exit rather than a calm one. Genuinely unsure. Watching this one.
