🇪🇸 Spain Rejects NATO’s 5% Defense Spending Push
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has firmly declined NATO’s new 5% GDP defense spending goal by 2035, calling it “excessive” and a threat to Spain’s social stability.
🔹 Despite pressure from NATO and former U.S. President Donald Trump, Sánchez argued that Spain’s 2.1% target is sufficient and warned further increases could harm pensions and public services.
🔹 In 2023, Spain spent just 1.28%—the lowest in NATO—but aims to reach the original 2% goal by end-2024.
Thanks to diplomatic talks, NATO’s final pledge language was softened, allowing Spain to opt out without violating the agreement.
