Remember when “robots taking our jobs” sounded like a distant future problem? That future is arriving much faster than expected. I recently read an interview with Geoffrey Hinton—the so-called Godfather of AI—and it felt less like speculation and more like a warning.
Hinton believes that by 2026, AI-driven job displacement will accelerate sharply. And this isn’t limited to factory work or simple automation. We’re talking about tasks once thought to require uniquely human judgment and creativity.
So what’s already happening?
AI is handling customer support roles today, and it’s rapidly approaching the point where it can complete complex software development that currently takes human teams months. AI efficiency is reportedly doubling about every seven months—an exponential curve that people consistently underestimate.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, entry-level job postings in certain industries have dropped by as much as 30%. Major companies like Amazon are cutting staff while increasing productivity through AI adoption.
But Hinton’s concern goes beyond technical capability. His real warning is about the system surrounding AI. Left unchecked, AI could drive mass unemployment and push wealth into the hands of a very small group. The incentive structure of modern capitalism—where speed and profit often outweigh safety and social impact—makes this outcome more likely.
There are two sides to this shift.
On one side, AI promises breakthroughs in medicine, education, and climate research that could benefit everyone. On the other, it threatens widespread job loss, unethical applications, and systems capable of deception in pursuit of objectives.
Hinton’s core message is that we’re not taking these risks seriously enough. Technology is advancing far faster than social, economic, and political systems can adjust.
Which raises uncomfortable but necessary questions.
What kinds of work will AI not be able to replace anytime soon?
And what should regular people do now—learn new skills, carve out a niche, or push for changes in how this technology is governed?
The future isn’t distant anymore. It’s already knocking.
