Traders are buying the dip on leverage: Leveraged-long US equity ETF trading volumes reached ~$26 billion last week, the highest since the post-April sell-off recovery. Excluding April, this was the 3rd-largest reading in at least 5.5 years. A higher level of dip buying activity has only been observed during the meme stock mania in late-2021 and at the beginning of the 2022 bear market. This is also more than DOUBLE the average recorded this year. Meanwhile, the number of leveraged equity ETFs has surged ~200 this year, to a record 701 in October. Now a 79% probability of a rate cut in December, up from 42% a week ago. Stocks love easy money: S&P 500 +1%, Nasdaq 100 +1.7%, Mag 7 +2.5%. The market recovery following the change in the odds of an interest rate cut confirms our theory that last week's massive correction was largely about the FOMC and ultimately... the missing data. Why? The FOMC is missing crucial inflation and labor data, and based on the last FOMC minutes and Fed officials' remarks, markets speculated last week that the cuts would not happen on December 10. When did the markets recover? After a few Fed officials said the December rate cut was still on the table, the odds of the cuts shot right back up, bringing the S&P500 and Nasdaq along. What does it mean? The markets are again hanging in the balance and speculating on the Fed's every word. This is how much the free market depends on the Fed's long-awaited QE, and in effect on the government's official data releases. The prolonged high interest rates and fear of the Fed coming late with all the cuts are also fueling market fears about risky assets, government debt, and the state of the economy as a whole. The BEA's announcement that it would reschedule the Q3 GDP release didn't help either. In times when markets depend on the Fed and the Fed relies so heavily on official data, perhaps it's time to change its data providers. S&P 500 earnings are incredibly strong: S&P 500 revenue growth is on track to reach +8.4% YoY in Q3 2025, the highest since Q3 2022. This figure reflects results from ~95% of companies that have already reported, combined with analyst estimates for those yet to report. If this holds, it would mark the 2nd consecutive quarterly improvement. The strength has been broad-based, with all 11 sectors reporting positive YoY revenue growth so far in Q3. This has been led by Information Technology, Health Care, and Communication Services, which are on track to post gains of +16.0%, +10.4%, and +10.0%, respectively. This massive deposit from BlackRock into Coinbase suggests they are still actively managing their crypto positions, likely driven by cash flow and risk considerations.
