The Hemi Network is a modular Layer 2 solution that is dedicated to merging the high security of Bitcoin with the smart contract flexibility of Ethereum. This fusion is primarily achieved through two key technological innovations the Hemi Virtual Machine hVM and the Hemi Bitcoin Kit hBK. Together they unlock a new geneation of decentralized finance DeFi applicatons that are natively aware of and secured by Bitcoin.

The Hemi Virtual Machine hVM An EVM with a Bitcoin Core

The hVM is the execution layer of the Hemi network. It is a modified and extended version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine EVM that is equipped with native Bitcoin interoperability. The core innvation is that the hVM embeds a full indexed Bitcoin node directly into the EVM environment.

  • Native State Access: This architectural design allows smart contracts written in Solidity to directly access and verify the complete state of the Bitcoin blockchain. This includes critical data like balances Unspent Transaction Outputs UTXOs and transaction details without relying on third party relayers or centralized oracles.

  • Trust Minimized Design: By having a synchronized Bitcoin view within the EVM trust is minimized. Developers can program logic that is directly enforced by Bitcoin s security ensuring that dApps are non custodial and free from the risks associated with traditinal wrapped or synthetic cross-chain assets.

  • Synchronization: To keep the Bitcoin state current the hVM uses a process such as a Tiny Bitcoin Daemon TBC which connects to the Bitcoin network downloads blocks and syncs them across all Hemi nodes. This process ensures that the smart contracts have access to a consistent and up to date view of Bitcoin.

The Hemi Bitcoin Kit hBK Developer Toolkit

The Hemi Bitcoin Kit hBK is a toolkit and smart contract library built to simplify the developer experience on Hemi. It acts as an abstraction layer that makes it easy for developers familiar with Ethereum tooling to access the unique Bitcoin awareness features of the hVM.

  • Simplified Queries: The hBK provides a set of precompiled smart contracts and simple function calls that abstract away the complexity of low-level Bitcoin Ethereum interoperability. For example a developer can use a single function call to check the balance of any Bitcoin address or retrieve a list of UTXOs.

  • Enabling Native DeFi: The ability to fetch and verify native Bitcoin data is the foundation for a new class of Bitcoin native DeFi use cases. The hBK allows developers to build applications like trustless non custodial lending markets where native Bitcoin can be used as collateral and the smart contract can enforce liquidation rules by directly interacting with the Bitcoin state.

  • Expanded Use Cases: The hBK facilitates the development of non custodial Bitcoin Ethereum decentralized exchanges DEXes Bitcoin smart wallets and various applications for asset management and provable auditing all secured by Bitcoin s Proof of Work.

In summary the hVM and hBK together create a powerful environment where Bitcoin s status as the most secure asset can be combined with the flexibility of Ethereum s smart contract ecosystem paving the way for the BTCFi renassance
