Part 01 — The Story and Foundation of WalletConnect
The Early Struggles of Web3 Users
Back in 2017–2018, the crypto world was exploding with new decentralized applications (dApps). You could lend money without a bank, trade tokens instantly, or buy digital art. But there was a problem: using these dApps wasn’t easy.
If you wanted to connect your wallet, you often had to rely on browser extensions like MetaMask, or copy and paste private keys — a risky move that left many users vulnerable. Mobile wallets were growing in popularity, but most dApps were built for desktop browsers. People had to juggle devices, addresses, and security concerns just to try a simple app.
This was a huge barrier. For Web3 to grow, users needed something simpler, safer, and universal.
The Birth of WalletConnect
That’s where WalletConnect came in. Launched in 2018 by developer Pedro Gomes, WalletConnect started as a simple idea:
What if there was an open protocol that allowed any wallet to talk to any dApp securely?
What if you could just scan a QR code and start using a dApp without extra downloads or risky key imports?
It sounded simple, but it solved one of Web3’s biggest pain points. Within months, WalletConnect became the bridge technology that allowed wallets and apps to “speak the same language.”
Fast-forward to today, WalletConnect has grown into a giant of Web3 infrastructure:
600+ wallets supported
65,000+ dApps integrated
300 million+ secure sessions facilitated
47.5 million users worldwide
Numbers like these show that WalletConnect isn’t just a tool. It’s the invisible backbone of Web3, powering everything from NFT marketplaces to DeFi platforms.
How WalletConnect Works (Without Jargon)
Here’s a simple breakdown of how WalletConnect works behind the scenes:
You open a dApp on your computer. It shows a QR code.
You open your crypto wallet on your phone and scan the code.
A secure session is created between your wallet and the dApp.
When the dApp asks for a transaction, your wallet shows the details. You approve or reject with one tap.
Your private keys never leave your wallet. Everything is end-to-end encrypted.
That’s it. No copy-pasting addresses. No exposing secrets. No installing clunky browser extensions.
This simple but powerful system is what made WalletConnect explode in adoption.
