The $XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a fast, decentralized, and open-source Layer-1 blockchain established in 2012. Its primary goal is to provide superior infrastructure for global, real-time value transfer. Native Asset: Its native cryptocurrency is XRP, which acts as a low-cost bridge currency for cross-border payments and serves as an anti-spam mechanism by requiring a small, burned transaction fee. Consensus: It uses a unique, energy-efficient mechanism called the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm (RPCA), or Federated Consensus. This system relies on trusted validators agreeing on transaction order via a Unique Node List (UNL), eliminating the need for energy-intensive mining (PoW) or staking (PoS). Performance: The XRPL boasts significant technical advantages, including transaction settlement in 3 to 5 seconds, a high throughput of over 1,500 transactions per second (TPS), and costs of only a fraction of a cent per transaction. Use Cases: Its key applications include cross-border payments, a high-performance, built-in Decentralized Exchange (DEX), support for tokenization (stablecoins, NFTs), and expanding functionality for DeFi (Automated Market Makers and upcoming smart contract features called "Hooks").
