A key divergence is seen between Somnia's commitment to optimized sequential execution and the parallel execution model employed by chains like Sui and Aptos. The core difference lies in how they handle transaction dependencies. Sui's model excels when transactions are independent—for example, minting unique NFTs for different users or transferring tokens between unrelated accounts. It can process these transactions simultaneously without waiting in a single queue. However, performance can degrade during "hot spot" scenarios, such as a popular NFT mint or concentrated trading in a single liquidity pool, where many users are competing to interact with the same contract. These high-contention events create dependencies, forcing the parallel engine to synchronize, which reintroduces latency. Somnia's approach, by contrast, optimizes the entire chain for processing a single, globally ordered stream of transactions as fast as possible. It does not need to analyze dependencies because the total order is predefined by the consensus chain. This makes its performance more predictable and robust during precisely those high-contention events that can bottleneck parallel systems. The trade-off is that for a workload consisting entirely of simple, independent transfers, a perfectly parallelized chain could, in theory, achieve higher throughput.
