Titanic: Movie Distortion and Real History In the movie Titanic, we see that when the ship starts sinking, the rich jump into boats to save their lives. Since the number of boats is limited, the sailors stand with guns in hand and stop the plutocrats, and women and children can save themselves in that opportunity. But the testimonies and statistics of the surviving passengers say the exact opposite. In the first-class cabin, all the children and almost all the women survived (out of 144 women, only 5 died, 3 of whom voluntarily stayed with their husbands). However, 70 percent of the men died. While 80 percent of the women in the second class survived, 90 percent of the men drowned. In other words, the richest and most powerful men in the world at that time voluntarily accepted certain death, only following the unwritten rule of “women and children first.” Some examples: John Jacob Astor, the richest man in America at the time, stood up and waved goodbye to his pregnant wife. Benjamin Guggenheim left his seat and said: “Tell your wife I followed the rules to the end. There will be no women on this ship just because Ben Guggenheim was a coward.” Many others silently followed that sense of honor and walked towards death. In other words, history is witness, not greed, but honor and sacrifice were what stood on the deck of the Titanic until the last moment on that terrible night. So why such distortions in the movie? Because today's audience would not believe that powerful, wealthy men voluntarily chose death. In modern times, it seems unbelievable—so directors change the story to make the idea that the rich are selfish, greedy, and the poor are deprived—sound more “realistic” to the audience.
