Why My Country Lost Billions in 2016 In 2016, when Bitcoin was trading between $700–$1,200 and Ethereum was available for as low as $4, a fraudulent company called OneCoin emerged. Marketed as a revolutionary cryptocurrency, OneCoin operated as a multi-level marketing (MLM) scheme led by Dr. Ruja Ignatova. The company offered packages ranging from €600 to €25,000, luring people with promises of massive returns. At that time, the US dollar was around PKR 112, and thousands of Pakistanis—driven by hope and aggressive marketing—sold their homes, assets, cars, rickshaws, and land to invest. Instead of seizing the opportunity to buy real cryptocurrencies like $BTC or $ETH , people were persuaded through grand seminars held in five-star hotels across Pakistan, where they were convinced this was the future of finance. Ultimately, OneCoin turned out to be one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in history. The founders disappeared, and billions of dollars were lost.
