The shutdown has officially landed, and markets are acting like the plug just got pulled mid-trade. Shutdowns alone don’t spook markets—lack of timelines and missing data do. Gold’s surge makes sense—that’s the classic “no faith in anyone” play. Bitcoin reacting instantly is the new normal; in past shutdowns, crypto wasn’t even part of the conversation. The dollar softening just highlights the growing cracks in confidence. The first day isn’t the issue. The real test is duration. If it’s resolved quickly, this becomes another forgettable shutdown blip. But if it drags on, expect slower spending, less risk appetite, and tighter liquidity. Shutdowns don’t kill markets. Uncertainty with no end date does.
