Ahmedabad police said no survivors were expected after a London-bound passenger plane with 242 on board crashed Thursday. Authorities also said that there could be more deaths in the medical college where the plane crashed.
"There appears to be no survivor in the crash," city police commissioner GS Malik told AFP. "And since the airplane has fallen on an area which was residential and had some offices, there are more casualties as well".
The plane, en-route to London, crashed in a residential area, five minutes after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in Gujarat. Visuals of the plane crash circulated on social media show plumes of dark smoke in the sky.
Among the 242 passengers, 169 passengers were Indians, 53 were British nationals, seven Portuguese and one Canadian. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is also suspected to be on board the Air India plane to London.

#AHMEDABAD India, June 12 (Reuters) - More than 100 people were killed when an Air India plane bound for London with 242 people on board crashed minutes after taking off from India's western city of Ahmedabad on Thursday, authorities said, one of the country's worst aviation disasters.
The plane was headed for Gatwick Airport, south of the British capital, Air India said, while police officers said it crashed in a residential area near the airport.
The passengers included 217 adults, 11 children and two infants, a source told Reuters. Of them, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, Air India said.
Aviation tracking site Flightradar24 said the plane was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, one of the most modern passenger aircraft in service.
It was the first crash for the Dreamliner, which began flying commercially in 2011, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. The plane that crashed on Thursday flew for the first time in 2013 and was delivered to Air India in January 2014, Flightradar24 said.
