01 Account System
In WeChat mini-programs, the account system is actually very simple and clear. The WeChat user ID is used as the only global traceability. Of course, you can also obtain the user’s mobile phone number as an auxiliary means of judgment.
But this is very different in Telegram's MiniApp. Because Ton itself is a public chain, the account system in Web3 has always been a one-to-many concept, that is, a user can have multiple wallets, and each wallet represents an account.
Telegram's MiniApp follows this rule, using the wallet address as the user's traceability ID in the MiniApp, and the Telegram user ID as an auxiliary. This leads to a very interesting phenomenon:
Some MiniApps specify that your Telegram can only correspond to one unique wallet address, and more than one will be invalid;
But it is more often bound to Telegram's ID, that is, the wallet address is used as the unique means of identifying the account. In other words, you can not have Telegram or not use Telegram's built-in wallet, you can use a third-party wallet like ton keeper, so that you can actually switch addresses continuously to log in different accounts in the same Telegram applet.
This also leads to an interesting thing: the Ton applet is not equal to the Telegram applet. The Telegram applet can exist directly without being bound to Ton. For example, the Wave Wallet phishing application is an application of the SUI chain that has deployed a mini-program on Telegram.
02 Payment System
The biggest difference between Telegram's MiniApp and WeChat's mini-program is the payment system. Compared with WeChat's fiat currency payment system, Telegram itself has its own public chain - TON, and all transaction payments are based on TON's cryptocurrency system.
In addition, earlier this year, Ton and Tether (USDT) were officially linked, and Ton also launched its own Tether-based USDT, which was undoubtedly a bombshell, indicating that Telegram already has a value anchor like legal currency. However, this is also a gray area, because it is not regulated, so it is easy to be used for some improper transactions. For example, prostitution can now be directly paid in cryptocurrency, and the chat is also on Telegram, so no evidence will be retained, which makes supervision extremely difficult.
03 Promotional methods
When WeChat Mini Program was released, it was really a big deal. Both Internet advertisements and WeChat’s own portals were trying their best to promote their Mini Program. But Telegram’s MiniApp seems to be sneaky.
Let's talk about Telegram's built-in wallet first. Most people may not be able to find the entrance to the wallet in Telegram. Because if you have never logged into the MiniApp in Telegram or no one has transferred any money to your ton (transfer through Telegram), the wallet tab will not appear in your menu. I have verified this with many friends, and even many native web3 friends are not aware of this. This actually proves from the side that the coverage of Telegram's mini-programs is still limited and there is great room for improvement.
What’s interesting about Telegram’s MiniApp is that it doesn’t have a clear unified entrance. It’s completely dependent on Telegram’s bot. You have to follow the bot to find it. This method also makes it difficult for many non-geeks to find the mini-app. Although there is a TrendingApps Channel (see the picture below) that can barely be considered an AppStore, it is extremely hidden.
As for why it is designed this way, using grayscale testing and not providing a public entrance, I personally guess there are two reasons.
First of all, although Ton and Telegram are essentially the same company, and the major shareholder is the boss of Telegram, they cannot get too close due to regulatory considerations and Telegram's listing. Originally Ton was called Telegram Open Network, but now it is called The Open Network. It is possible that Telegram deliberately avoids suspicion.
In addition, the grayscale test continues, and it is not ruled out that Telegram is holding back a big move, waiting to be released.
04 Target audience
The WeChat Mini Program crowd is actually very easy to describe, mainly Chinese communities, and mainly use legal currency. However, the Telegram crowd seems to be a little different. Telegram started out in the early days because it was not regulated and allowed free communication, so many seed users were people in a gray area; later, with the rise of Web3, Telegram became the main communication tool for Web3 people.
Therefore, the core group of Telegram is a group of gray industry and gamblers, and of course some normal people who want to communicate secretly are not excluded. This also leads to the difference between the main content of Telegram MiniApp and WeChat Mini Program. The most popular MiniApp of Telegram is ClickApp or some very brainless small games. On the one hand, it is suitable for this group of people, and on the other hand, this simple form is also convenient for scientists to get airdrops and tokens.
05 Development Difficulty
In terms of development difficulty, Telegram's MiniApp is far lower than WeChat's mini program.
The first one supports converting web pages directly into miniapps. You only need to send a link to botfather to directly convert h5 into miniapp.
Secondly, it provides a complete ton SDK. Many friends are worried that the contract is too complicated and difficult for web2 developers to enter, but it is not that troublesome. Most of your data is not actually interacted on the chain, and it is mainly centralized. You actually interact with the chain in two steps.
The first step is to obtain the ton wallet as the username when logging in;
The second step is to call the ton interface when paying. Of course, if you want to issue your own tokens, you will need to know more about chaining and issuance settings, but this step is not that complicated, and most games use points instead of tokens, so you don’t need to consider this part in the short term.
