Will WhatsApp create its own cryptocurrency?

Officially, WhatsApp has not confirmed any plans to launch its own cryptocurrency. However, there have been rumors and speculations about this since 2018, when the company Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, created a blockchain division to focus on technology-related projects.

In 2020, some media outlets, such as Tecnoblog and Tudocelular, reported that the launch of WhatsApp's cryptocurrency, possibly called "GlobalCoin", could happen that year. The idea was for it to be used for payments within the app and on other company services, such as Facebook and Instagram.

However, to date, nothing has come to fruition. It is important to remember that rumors and speculation are not always confirmed, and WhatsApp may have chosen not to move forward with its plans for several reasons.

Even so, WhatsApp's integration with blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies is not ruled out. In May 2023, Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, announced an update that allows integration with cryptocurrency and blockchain decentralized applications (DApps).

This means that although WhatsApp does not have its own cryptocurrency, users can start using other types of cryptocurrencies and blockchain applications within the app.

Therefore, the possibility of WhatsApp launching its own cryptocurrency in the future still exists, but there is no official information to confirm this. What we can say is that the company is increasingly interested in blockchain technology and how it can be used to offer new services to its users.
