To put it very simply, a domain or domain name is most often the name of a website. But it is not always the case. In this post I will tell everything using the example of the “.ton” domain zone; there are other domain zones that work on other blockchains, for example “.sui”, everything in them is approximately the same.

Your domain on the .ton network is the name you choose, to which you can “link” your crypto wallet, website, or even smart contract.

The essence of a domain is that it is a readable and human-friendly name, if, for example, you compare it with a wallet address (Example address, my ton wallet: EQDZ3FVcaCjwbL4IEtfnWPokJilaPUdqzHNwv1_GUV_U-Pt0). A huge advantage of the domain is that its owner is issued an NFT (an example of a very useful application of this technology). As a result, no one (almost) will be able to block your domain (including due to decentralization. There is no administrator in the “.ton” domain zone), as happens in the “.com”, “.ru” domain zones, etc. . For exceptional cases, it is possible to change the owner or delete a domain through a network-wide vote, but there must be very compelling reasons.

A nuance that you need to know about before purchasing a domain is that during the year, the domain owner needs to send at least some part of the tone to the domain and thus renew it for another year. If the domain is not renewed, it will go into auction mode. This is to ensure that domains are not lost forever if their owners somehow lose access to them. For example, they forgot the seed phrase for the wallet on which the NFT of the domain is stored.

In this post I gave only a general understanding, without technical specifications.
