The price of Solana ($SOL ) surged by over 6% in a day, reaching $216. This made it the leader in weekly growth among the ten largest cryptocurrencies.
The main reason for this increase is the vote for SIMD-0326 — an update called Alpenglow. This proposal is expected to significantly speed up the network, reducing block finalization time to 150 milliseconds. Such an improvement will make transactions and the operation of DeFi applications much faster.
What new features will the update bring?
New Votor architecture: It will replace the current Proof-of-History and TowerBFT mechanisms. With this change, validator voting will take place off-chain, reducing the load on the network.
Simplified Rotor protocol: Instead of the multi-layered Turbine system, a simpler protocol for block propagation will be introduced.
Voting and its terms
Voting for the update lasts for three epochs (from 840 to 842). Approval requires support from at least two-thirds of the validators. Additionally, a quorum is necessary, with at least 33% of validators participating in the vote.
Currently, 100 validators have cast their votes, accounting for 10.6% of the total votes.
