The bit layer, or physical layer, is the lowest level in a computer network or data communication system. It handles the transmission and reception of raw bits (0s and 1s) using electrical signals, light, or radio waves.

This layer defines how voltage levels represent binary values, manages signal timing, and controls how data moves through physical media such as cables, fiber optics, or wireless channels. It doesn’t interpret the data’s meaning—its sole role is to ensure accurate physical delivery of bits between devices.
